Draft 1 THIS IS A DRAFT
Self-Assessment Essay
Introduction:
Writing for Engineering is a course that involves with three major works: a lab report analysis, a technical description and a proposal. In this class I became independent, persistent and confident about my writing. This class helped me to develop interpersonal skills and independent writing such as how to edit by myself and how to start an outline. This semester, I was able to write an outline and it help me to organize my introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion. I reached my goal to write an academic paper (lab report and proposal), writing a strong thesis statement and being able to communicate my group (other students) about my writing.
What I did in this course:
This course is to learn about synthesizing information, finding solutions and presenting ideas among other students to be able to communicate, providing knowledge and presenting ideas in a professional setting. There are three course learning outcomes that I achieved in my writing. These are enhancing my reading, drafting, revising and editing skills , developing and engaging in the collaborative and social aspects of writing processes, I was able to strengthen my sources by synthesizing, analyzing and summarizing. All of the papers I wrote in Writing for Engineers helped me achieve these outcomes.
Body 1: enhancing strategies for drafting, reviewing and editing
One course outcome that I improved in was “enhancing strategies for drafting and, reviewing and editing.” I began to write multiple drafts from my class assignments. In the beginning of this semester I did not have this habit. I made time to go to the writing center and to fix my grammar, structure, and the content. In my second semester of college, I became accustomed to writing outlines and it helped me organize and structure my writing. I received help in my writing at the CCNY writing center, SEEK pal center and some of my friends. I notice a change through my first essay about the lab report analysis to my second paper on my technical description. In my first paper my professor commented that my introduction and conclusion needed to be longer and the paper needs to be five pages. This changed my habits by writing a stronger thesis statement and a hook for my introduction in my technical description about braces. This helped to contribute to the length of my paragraphs, because(what it means). These two papers are different in structure. For example, the technical description required pictures and bullet points, while in the lab report analysis it is not required. (be sure to write a comparison).
Body Paragraph 2 develop and engage in collaborative and social aspects of writing processes:
Developing and engaging in collaborative and social aspects of writing processes helped me shaped my writing by the group works from the lab report analysis and the proposal. I was able to handle the workload, in which it consists of editing, revising and also collaborating ideas. The proposal is similar to the lab report analysis with the structure and the format. However the lab report analysis does not require any of the graphs, work cited and headings. This is different because the lab report analysis is much more describing the problems and the lab reports to compare and contrast about. Necessarily, I had problems with the formatting in which I focused a lot on structure but not more on content. I thought that it has to be in an MLA format with different criteria. Luckily, my group told me focus on what you have to write about and compare and contrast the two lab reports.
Body paragraph 3 Strengthen the use of sources
(Proposal and technical description)
Outside resources is required to provide factual evidence, details and proofs for my research area such as my proposal about the wheelchair. However, this allowed me to prove what are the effective prices for materials, labor power and the facility. The CUNY database was one way to get credible sources for my writing. I was able to learn to get credible sources from a writing tutor at the CCNY writing center. Having a credible source means that you have a good evidence, details and provide factual text that supports an analysis. I became stronger once I had stronger factual evidence. The proposal relies on sources outside of the CUNY database. For example on my wheelchair proposal I have to find sources from PDF(s) online and research on the materials that are affordable. Unlike the proposal, the technical description relies on the CUNY database and is more toward different types of braces, parts of a braces and the structure. These two papers rely on quotations and pictures (syntax), which helps bring the paper brighter and “colorful.
So in Conclusion, writing in engineering is a course that shaped my writing skills as a college student. I was able to work with peers, finding my resources at the CUNY database and enhancing my strategies toward my drafting , revising and editing skills. This helped me be motivated in writing papers and was a great practice for a future career in writing research papers. This development of writing changed my habits from writing outline to make sure that I organize my plan out to writing the final paper so that I can polish it. It was challenging, but at the end it was worth my time and energy, because I can learn from my own mistakes every single day.
